1. Montessori teachers are facilitators
Facilitators can be defined as, “persons that are helping to bring about some outcome (as productivity, communication, or learning) by providing unobtrusive or indirect supervision, assistance, or guidance.” As a result, Montessori schools use this method when helping children learn on their own. The children are not handed information as they often are in a traditional classroom. Instead, the adult facilitates an interest in the child discovering the information for themselves.
2. More hands-on approach in Montessori classroom
In a Montessori classroom, you will notice children able to touch the objects in the classroom. Maria Montessori saw the need for children to learn through concrete objects rather than by abstract information alone.
For example, when learning to count the children use a special set of Montessori beads. They have a concrete object to help in the process of learning. In a traditional classroom many concepts are taught through abstract instruction (counting apples on a page for example).
3. Less emphasis on grades
In a traditional classroom, teachers and parents gauge a child’s success by the grades they are bringing home. This is the way to tell whether the student is understanding the material. However, in a Montessori school, there are no grades (or else little emphasis on them). Instead, children are expected to learn the material and then move on to the next area.
There is no 70% correct and then you move on. Instead, since children are moving at their own pace, they are able to go back and do the work until they know it 100%. 4. Able to look after the overall well-being of the child
Montessori is unique in the way it is able to look at the overall wellbeing of the child, and allow the child to develop skills at their own pace. Academic success is not the only outcome that a Montessori school hopes to achieve for the children. They also want emotionally and socially healthy children. This need to look at the overall child is made possible by the child’s ability to work at their own pace.
The adults are not having to rush through assignments to make sure everything gets completed on time. Instead, the adult is there to gauge where the child is at and what they may need. Since the child is working independently this type of environment often leads to more meaningful and beneficial interactions between teachers and children.
Schools that employ the Montessori method are not necessarily the best choice for every child and they are not necessarily better schools. The Montessori method is a different method of educating children that is beneficial to many children though.
